Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle After Wave of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The mission was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the experience, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated spacecraft launched from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the edge of outer space.

The diverse crew also comprised experts in different industries.

The enterprise behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
